Grass seed for new lawns and lawn repairs
Grass seed is a flexible option for creating a lawn, repairing bare areas and thickening grass that has become thin or tired. It is well suited to projects where you have time for germination and establishment, and it allows seed to be distributed around curves, narrow sections and awkward garden shapes. TW Aggregates offers grass seed in sizes for domestic repairs, complete lawns and larger landscaping or trade requirements.
Choosing the right pack size
Estimate the total lawn area in square metres and compare it with the stated coverage rate for new sowing or overseeding. Creating a lawn from bare soil normally uses more seed per square metre than overseeding existing grass. A smaller pack can be convenient for patches and modest gardens, while a professional bulk bag is better suited to extensive lawns and repeat work. Store unused seed in a cool, dry place and keep the pack securely sealed.
Preparing soil and sowing seed
Remove weeds and debris, cultivate the upper soil and rake the area until it is level and fine enough for sowing. Firm the surface gently so it does not sink deeply underfoot. Distribute seed as evenly as possible, ideally in two passes at right angles, then lightly rake it into the surface. Water using a fine spray so the seed is not displaced, and keep the upper soil moist while germination takes place. Protect the area from heavy traffic until the young grass is established.
Weather and soil temperature affect germination, so growth will not always appear evenly or immediately. Continue gentle watering during dry periods and make the first cut only when the grass is sufficiently established, using sharp mower blades and removing no more than a small proportion of the height.
Existing lawns benefit from preparation before overseeding. Mow the grass, remove loose thatch and rake or scarify the surface so seed can contact the soil. Concentrate on bare and thin areas while still distributing seed consistently across the wider lawn. After sowing, keep the area from drying out and prevent birds or heavy use from disturbing it. Results will depend on season, weather, ground preparation and the care given during establishment.
